Most of us are done cleaning up our yard and gardens, and are prepared for Winter.

Beyond that, while you are finishing up your preparations for Winter, start making notes of what you liked and didn't like in your yard or garden this past year.

Winter is the ideal time to not only review this past season's notes, but also to rework the design of the areas of your yard that aren't working well for you, or seem to be prone to problems (pests, diseases, plants dying, etc.) Be sure to note where your perennials are so you don't weed them out in the Spring. Revisit your notebook to review what worked for you and didn't work so well, so that you can begin planning for next year. (Pictures taken throughout the different seasons will also help you plan for changes.)

Developing a plan during Winter ensures that you are fully prepared to put it in place when the nurseries open in the Spring. Many new varieties of annuals and perennials are available each year, and creating a plan in the Winter will give you the opportunity to try some of these new temptations.
